Praful advocates reduction of Indo-Pak nuclear rivalry

There is a growing need for the civilian populace of both countries of India and Pakistan to make their governments include the contentious issues of non-proliferation and nuclear risk reduction high on the official agenda. If not the continual increase in expenditure and risk can jeopardize the posterity of both countries. This view was recently expressed by the renowned Indian columnist Praful Bidwai in the recent days.


He was speaking at a function in Karachi, organized by the Pakistan Institute of Labour Education and Research, on both prospect and future of the peace process between India and Pakistan, especially after 10 years of their nuclear tests. He was also found to state that it is highly important for both governments to open up borders and to commence a new age when there should be travel and trade through a liberal visa regime. But he also lamented that there was no such intention on the part of both governments and this was evident from their hesitations in opening consulates in Mumbai and Karachi. To him, there is a growing demand in India towards the adoption of special initiatives for promoting bilateral people-to-people contacts and thus to normalize the tension.

 

Now how to proceed in this context? Well, he has his own prescription. To him, the recently concluded IPL cricket was an \\\\\\\'outstanding example of the lead citizens have provided in breaking barriers\\\\\\\'.  Apart from this, to his personal consideration there should be exchanges of school children and theatre groups. He also stressed on the setting up of an independent people\\\\\\\'s commission on South Asian history since it had been largely contorted. He was also of the view that the SAARC should be used by the media \\\\\\\'for pushing the governments\\\\\\\'.

 

However, to a person like Praful Bidwai, who has been forthright in his criticism on military expenditure over nuclear weapons by India and Pakistan, the indifferent attitude of both governments were threatening the peace process in the region of South Asia and it was the high time to restrain both of them. Or else worst would follow.
